We all want the Last Word, especially when an interaction gets heated.
The Last Word says, “I’m not a pushover.”
The Last Word says, “You can’t mess with me.” #Respect
The Last Word says, “I was here. Don’t think I’m invisible.”
The Last Word says, “I won.” Because only one person can have the Last Word.
But what if we occasionally gave up the need to have the Last Word? What if we traded it for something different? Something like:
“I’ll think about that.”
“I think I understand where you’re coming from.”
“Thanks for caring enough to tell me what you think.”
The useless heat might go out of the room.
You can always come back and say something later. But you may decide you don’t need to after all.
