A senior leader was sharing recently about a challenging interaction with a colleague.

“I was about to ask him a question, but I could tell from his face that now wasn’t the time,” he said, laughing. “I know this guy well enough to know that asking a question wasn’t going to help anything. It was just going to cause an explosion.”

That’s pro listening at work. It loves questions. All kinds of questions. But it is attentive to the other person and knows that in the end, it takes two to have a conversation.

If one of you is too busy, too distracted, too amped up to do it, it may be better to wait.
