“You have two ears and one mouth, so you should listen twice as much as you talk.”

Maybe you’ve heard that advice. And on the surface, it sounds pithy and correct.

But if we’re not careful, we’ll think that it’s just that simple. Shut up and listen, because listening starts with your ears, dummy!

Except it doesn’t. We all know that we can keep our mouth quiet while still being checked out. We’ve actually become pros at this, so much so that listening is in danger of extinction. And ironically, we’re so distracted that many of us want the hack to listen better. To listen faster. To listen more efficiently.

Luckily, we can get better at listening. But it doesn’t start with our ears. It starts between our ears.
